Promoting Gender Equality, Positive Masculinities, and Peace for Stronger Families and Communities

At Réseau Culturel Sangwa, we recognize that gender equality and positive masculinities are fundamental pillars for building peaceful, resilient families and inclusive communities. When women and men are treated as equals within the household, responsibilities are shared, decisions are made collaboratively, and children grow up in environments that model respect, fairness, and mutual understanding. Such foundations not only strengthen family bonds but also help break cycles of gender-based violence, discrimination, and harmful social norms.

In line with this vision, Réseau Culturel Sangwa conducted training sessions on gender equality and positive masculinities while also engaging broader community efforts in partnership with Gatsibo, Nyarugenge and Rwamagana Districts, with financial support from AEGIS Trust, Innocente and Christian. These sessions brought together both women and men, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to challenge entrenched cultural norms and advocate for their rights and responsibilities within their families and communities.

Through participatory approaches, including gender-segregated group discussions and open dialogue, participants were able to reflect on existing inequalities, identify critical gaps, and explore practical ways to promote harmony and mutual respect. Men were particularly encouraged to embrace positive masculinities championing non-violence, shared responsibility, and supportive partnerships; while women were empowered to voice their perspectives and actively participate in decision-making processes.

By fostering awareness, dialogue, and collective commitment, these initiatives are contributing to the promotion of peace, gender equality, and social cohesion. They empower individuals not only to transform their own attitudes and behaviors but also to act as catalysts for change within their communities, ultimately advancing a more just, inclusive, and equitable society where dignity and harmony are a lived reality for all.
