1. HEALTH AND SRHR
Implemented Projects
Réseau Culturel Sangwa (R.C. SANGWA) contributed to addressing community health issues by implementing two key projects:
- Empowering R.C. SANGWA Youth Ambassadors on Leadership, SRHR and ICT (2020–2022)
- Promoting Girls’ and Women’s Leadership for Positive Change in Gatsibo District (2021–2022)
These projects supported young people and adults to improve their knowledge and practices related to:
- Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
- Prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS
- Good nutrition for families, especially pregnant women and children under 5.
Key Achievements
- 100% of sensitized community members increased their knowledge on SRHR, HIV/AIDS and other communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- 28% of targeted couples (75/270) and 86% of young mothers (129/150) adopted family planning after trainings and sensitization sessions.
- Improved nutrition through the establishment of kitchen gardens, small livestock rearing and plantation of fruit trees.
- 64 children born to teen and young mothers received nutritious food support at Sangwa Center, Rwikiniro.
- Beneficiaries became confident in adopting zero-tolerance attitudes toward HIV/AIDS and other diseases, and openly discussed SRHR and made informed health decisions.
- 150 teen and young mothers were trained on parental responsibilities, family planning, reproductive health rights, and the risks of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.
- 8 clubs in and out of schools (301 females and 207 males) were established to sensitize the community on SRHR, disease prevention and good nutrition.
- 100% of Twongere Umusaruro Cooperative members regularly paid their health insurance and contributed to Ejo Heza, the national long-term savings program.
- In collaboration with Community Facilitators, RCS organized awareness campaigns using athletics and football competitions, delivering messages on SRHR, nutrition, and disease prevention to 17,342 people in Rwimbogo and Kiziguro Sectors.
2. CULTURE, ARTS AND SPORTS
RCS believes that active participation in sports, creative arts, cultural clubs and community associations strengthens intergenerational relationships and fosters a cohesive society. Sports and culture are used as powerful tools for community sensitization, expression, and empowerment.
Strategies to Promote Culture, Arts and Sports
RCS implements the following initiatives to promote cultural values and artistic expression:
- Organizing sports competitions
- Initiating cultural clubs (theatre, sketches, dances, songs)
- Producing booklets of poems, storytelling, cartoons and cultural tales to disseminate community messages
- Using arts and cultural events as channels for education on themes such as Gender Equality, Human Rights, Health, SRHR, Peace, Environment, Social Justice and SGBV prevention
Key Achievements (2019–2022)
Under the project “Edition and Publication of Rwandan Tales”, the following results were achieved:
- 7 cultural troops were created in RCS intervention communities.
- 2 community mobile libraries were established to promote reading among youth and adults—one in Kabeza (Kicukiro District) and one in Rugenge Cell (Nyarugenge District).
- Young girls were empowered through cultural and educational activities to learn, lead, decide and thrive.
- R. C. SANGWA produced and published numerous creative works, including:
Nyiraburo, Impanuro ya Maniraho, Le Sorcier Muhwegera, Les Rêves de Nyakujya, Ndabatabaza, Nimunyumve, Mundengere, among others. - Developed and disseminated educational placards on Gender Equality, Human Rights, Health, SRHR, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Social Justice, Environment Protection, and the fight against SGBV.
